My Contribution

My Contribution
by Doris O’Brien

Honor, courage, healing, safety, sacrifice, unconditional love, compassion, gratitude,
trust. These are only a few of the words that come to mind as I reflect on my staffing the
Vets’ Journey Home weekend.

My intention when I went to staff the weekend was to support the work and perhaps share
my experience of what it was like to be a military wife during the time of the Viet Nam
war.

When I met the other staff I was struck by their passion for this work, their commitment
to healing the wounds of war, and their willingness to sacrifice once again in the service
of their brothers or sisters.

It was an honor to participate in this weekend and witness the work of those who came to
tell their story, and open themselves to healing and compassion.

Although I went to the weekend with the expectation of being there for others, I was
started on a path that healed a wound I have carried for many years.

The courage, the love, the sacredness of this work has humbled me like nothing else. It
was truly a life-changing experience.

The next Vets’ Journey Home Weekend is December 7-9, 2007, with another one to take
place May 30-June 1, 2008. Contact Sam Luna at 281/395-9152 or visit
vetsjourneyhome.org to get more information and register for the weekend.
