I Was a Soldier Once
I Was a Soldier Once
by Marion Wehmeyer, Vets’ Journey Home Weekend, September 2007
“I love the Lord because he hears and answers my prayers.” Psalm 116:1.
I was a soldier once
Proud and true,
Who served my country
Like so many do.
I faced danger on the battlefield,
Risked life and limb,
Suffered mentally too!
My cause was for justice to prevail,
Even though I was brought
To the gates of hell.
I was a soldier once,
Right out of school;
Young and proud,
Who had a duty to do.
When the battle was fought,
It was I who won;
I carried the fight to
The evil one.
Then I came home after many days,
Expecting my fellow countryman
To give me praise.
I fought for them, you know,
The people back home,
So that they could be free
Wherever they roam.
I was a soldier once,
But to my surprise,
I heard cries of hatred
Proclaiming my cause
Was all lies.
Now I find that those friends of mine
Taunt and belittle me;
That’s not very kind.
I was a soldier once,
Battered and abused,
By those folks I protected;
But I have good news!
I was a soldier once,
Now old and gray,
Who became closer to God
In every way.
Those who fought,
Those who refused,
Must be forgiven;
That’s the good news!
We travel through time
Thinking we know it all,
Trying to decide
Who shall win or fall.
But that has been decided
For me and you,
Before we were born;
Before we even knew.
Hatred for soldiers who
Give their all,
Is not the way
To answer the call.
I was a soldier once,
Who served my way,
To insure justice and freedom
Has its day.
To all those dissenters
Who throw unrighteous clay,
Remember the real winners
Are those who can pray!
